The many faces of the Assad regime

The many faces of the Assad regime

There is no doubt that the Assad regime was – for more than five years now – playing on the contradictions of politics and emotion in the West, making them choose between global stability and democracy, between security in the Mediterranean or the chaos that it can play with simply because it is a regime which has many spies within the jihadist organizations.

The strength of the Assad regime is in its bizarre ability at exporting large numbers of facets to his allies and enemies alike, without causing conflict between those faces. On one hand, it promotes a secular face that Europe may like since it can stay away from religion and deal with music, historical antiquities, technological development, childhood, etc.

On the other hand, it is the best ally for Iran and the one in southern Lebanon since it promotes the face of a believer in the shrines of Al al-Bayt and their conservation. Here, it promotes the Alawite face which is the heart of the Shiite crescent. And for those who like the idea of resistance and opposition to the brutal enemy, according to the literature of the regime and the structure of its ideologies.

This regime leaves no occasion without exploiting it and taking advantage of that brutal enemy, holding it responsible for the destruction of the Arab region, the assassinations and the conspiracies. In the meantime, his media propaganda campaigns exaggerate its hollow slogans of praise to Palestine and Al-Aqsa mosque and calls for the need to fight against the Zionist enemy. Meanwhile, its country is burning from north to south. The unfortunate thing is that this “resistance” face is still receiving much attention from many leftists and pan-Arabists of the Arab elites who subsist on the idea of the central Arab issue.

The regime does not take in consideration those people with the idea of peace and moderation, for it believes to be the master of the idea of peace initiatives. The regime, up until this year, still calls for the resumption of negotiations between the parties (Arab-Israeli) based on the famous Rabin deposit, an act which has gained many supporters.

There is also the face of the Christian which calls for the support of the Christians of the Orient, ignoring the many wars the regime waged against Lebanon’s Christians and the fact that Syria and Lebanon have seen since the seventies of the last century until the first decade of this century, the largest waves of displacement of the Assyrian Christians.

There is of course the pure, devoted, Muslim face that does not skip an Eid or Friday prayer or any religious event without welcoming Muslim preachers in their moderate orientation and reminding of the necessity to amend the religious discourse directed to the young generations.

Of course, we will not forget the regime’s socialist face with the countries of South America and its capitalist face that negotiates on the one hand, with the International Monetary Fund, while on the other, with the European Union for some partnership opportunities.

It is a regime that is manipulating contradictions with a face for every stage and a mask for each state and president, a regime which has no fixed values and no principles outlining its work. It is a regime which could build diplomatic relations with a country like Germany, but would not hesitate to receive the Nazis fleeing from prosecution, a regime which could one day commit a massacre in Tel al-Zaatar refugee camp in Lebanon, while inaugurating offices for Palestinian organizations in Syria, a regime which does not know how to say no to any party as it needs everyone without forgetting to make others need to work with it without any hesitation.

It is not a flaw in a regime to have a million faces, but it is strange how the international community can until now believe all those faces to a regime which has aired its dirty laundry to the entire world.

It is a regime for each stage, and for a regional war, a civil war and proxy wars. It is a regime that is also for peace, a regime with no order if it is wanted to be as such. Perhaps it is planned to be reconstructed and perhaps it is expected to withstand so it can become the regime which will spread human rights and democracy all over the region!
